In the early hours of Tuesday 27th September the body of PC George Gutteridge was found in a country lane near to Howe Green, between Romford and Ongar, in Essex. William Henry Kennedy and Frederick Guy Browne were convicted of the murder of William George Gutteridge and sentenced to death.

William George Gutteridge was found shot dead at Stapleford Abbots, Romford. He was a police constable. His body was found in a zig -zag trail of blood and nearby two bullets were picked up.

The police suspected two car thieves Frederick Browne and Pat Kennedy but did not have any evidence. Two Webley revolvers were found in the River Thames, but Mr Churchill proved that they could not have been the murder weapon because they did not make the same mark on the cartridge cases.
